The protagonist Reverend Thomas Pemberton (Pem), whose beneficence pervades the main storyline, is the most interesting and provocative character in City of God. This seasoned, well-read, and highly intelligent cleric undergoes a number of varied and often taxing life experiences, to emerge as the conscience of the book.
