Southern Gothic
The so-called Southern Gothic style of writing leveraged outcast characters or characters who found themselves in bizarre or “grotesque” situations set in the American South. The characters may suffer from literal or figurative isolation within provincial or hierarchical settings where established norms and social roles would instead suggest a cozy community. Southern Gothic characters suffer conflicts that seem existential: They question the meaning of life and their role in the world and social order.
