Though “A Circle in the Fire” was rarely reviewed on its own, Flannery O’Connor’s overall accomplishments as a short story writer have been well-chronicled. Critics who appreciated her work believed she deftly crafted simple-seeming stories packed with dramatic action as well as allegorical meaning. Those who disliked it said she leveraged images of the grotesque or used exaggerated characters to comic effect only, reinforcing stereotypes of the eccentric South. Some critics even interpreted her choice of subject material as a point-of-view symptomatic of her poor health.
