Mrs. Cope
Though she goes by “Mrs.” it is unclear if Mrs. Cope has an absent husband or is a widow. She operates a farm, one of the largest pieces of land in her county, and she employs both a couple – Mr. and Mrs. Pritchard – and two African American workers who help her tend the grounds. She is the mother of Sally Virginia, age 12, and shelters her where possible from the threats she perceives from strangers.
