   The boys pay a steep price for their father's differing political beliefs in Book 3 when Danny's father decides that David Malter's support of Israel and Zionism means that Reuven and Danny can no longer be friends.  The boys continue to go to school together but are no longer allowed to speak to each other.  This is a huge price for them to pay because their friendship is so important to both of them.  Reuven describes  this separation as "agony."  Eventually, the boys are allowed to speak again, but it takes a long time for Reuven to get over his anger enough to go see Reb Saunders.
