    "They tell you to do your thing but they don't mean it. They don't want you to do your thing, not unless it happens to be their thing, too. It's a laugh, Goober, a fake. Don't disturb the universe, Goober, no matter what the posters say.", from chapter 38.

    This quote shows Jerry is giving up. He is depressed. Before this time in the novel, everything he did he was proud of. He was proud to resist the crowd at school. Jerry tells Goober now that no actions of indiviuality are worth it because of people like Archie.This ending feels really sad.

    When the novel ends the bad people win and the good people suffer. Jerry tries to control his own future but The Vigils are too powerful. Jerry just accepts that he has little control of his own life.
