   Jerry's main thoughts could be that he refuses to give in.  As a high school student I am sure that you encounter alot of peer pressure.  At times you may find that you are pressuring yourself because you want to fit in; you want to do what all the other kids are doing.  The Vigils could be compared to your typical high school "in crowd".  Because they were considered (by themselves) to be the popular kids, they believed that everyone should do as they did.  Jerry on the other hand saw that even when other kids did what the Vigils forced them to do they were never left alone, instead they were constantly harassed.  Jerry probably thought, if he sold the chocolates he still wouldn't be considered to be in the "in crowd" so, why not opt out and maybe others would follow.  If everyone else followed then the Vigils would no longer have a hold on the students.
