Introduction
China has traditionally been a nation of poets. From ancient times through the first decade of the twentieth century, Chinese poetry held a position of importance unequaled by that of any other nation. By virtue of several important factors—linguistic, cultural, social, educational, and political—Chinese poetry, until the downfall of the monarchy in 1911, manifested certain characteristics that are unique.
