Running away involves being voluntarily absent from home at least overnight without permission from a parent or caretaker.

Every year about 800,000 children in the United States are reported missing and another estimated 500,000 go missing without being reported. Not all of these children are runaways. This number also includes children abducted by family members, usually in custody disputes, and a very small number of stranger abductions.
