        Henrik van Boven is the best friend of the protagonist, Phillip Enright, in Theodore Taylor's novel, The Cay. Like young Phillip, Henrik is 11 years old, and both boys live in Willemstad, Curacao, in the Dutch West Indies. Henrik was born in Holland, and his father was a government official. Phillip and Henrik used to imagine they were pirates while playing at old Fort Amsterdam, but it soon became too dangerous to visit the fort because of the threat of German U-boat attacks. Henrik's 

    ... face was round and he was chubby. His hair was straw-colored and his cheeks were always red. Henrik was very serious about everything he said or did. 

    Henrik had lived most of his life on Willemstad and had spent more time with the native islanders there, a thought that Phillip remembered after becoming shipwrecked with Timothy.
