The shipwrecked inhabitants of Theodore Taylor's novel, The Cay, patiently await the impending hurricane that is nearing their otherwise uninhabited island. A breeze begins to blow, and Timothy spots dark clouds in the distance. The wind turns cool, and then it begins to rain. As the surf crashes in the background,

I felt movement around my legs and feet. Things were slithering. I screamed to Timothy who shouted back, "B'nothin' but d'lil' lizzard, comin' high groun'."

It was only lizards, scurrying to higher ground, that Phillip felt. Soon the hut was gone, leaving Timothy, Phillip and Stew Cat to hug the sand until the water forced them to tie themselves to the palm tree in order to survive the rising waters.
