After several months waiting to be rescued, Timothy observes the signs of a coming storm instead. A noise similar to a rifle shot is heard, but it is not gunfire nor is it a rescue party. The two castaways retreated to the highest part of the island to await "d'tempis," knowing that the waves would rise well above the cay. There, they would later strap themselves to a palm tree to wait out the hurricane.
