Alice Mary Norton was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on February 17, 1912. Her parents read to her aloud from the age of one, and she was a fluent reader by the time she entered school. She was rewarded for good grades with new books and she especially loved the Oz books by Frank Baum. In high school she wrote for the school paper and for the Quill and Scroll Club, whose members in their senior year were encouraged to publish their own book using the school's print shop. The novel she produced there was later rewritten and published as Ralestone Lack in 1938.
