    As Holden is leaving the Pencey Prep dorm, he tells us:

     "Some stupid guy had thrown peanut shells all over the stairs, and I damn near broke my crazy neck. (Salinger)

    Holden almost falls on his way down the stairs.

    He also nearly falls when he goes into Ackleys room after his fight with Stradlater. He said he stepped on someone's shoe and nearly fell on  his head.
