The main metaphors within the play are the big double bed; Brick's crutch; and the console which holds the television, liquor cabinet, and radio-phonograph. The big double bed is a metaphor for the importance sex and sexual relationships in the play; Brick's crutch is a metaphor for his weakness and inability to be a whole, complete man; and the console is a metaphor for the ways that people try to avoid intimacy.
