In the first paragraph of the story, Montresor says, "A wrong is unredressed when retribution overtakes its redresser." In other words, satisfactory revenge can only occur when the one taking revenge is not caught.  Secondly, Montresor says, "It is equally unredressed when the avenger fails to make himself felt as such to him who has done the wrong." Montresor is saying that a wrong cannot be corrected and revenge taken if the one on whom revenge is taken doesn't really feel the sting of revenge. Montresor is successful in both ways. At the end of the story, he says it has been 50 years since he buried Fortunato alive. Thus, up to the point, he has not been caught. In addition, Fortunato certainly felt the sting of revenge as he was dying in a cave he could not escape.
