    To protect Fortunato from the dampness of the catacombs, Montresor gives him wine several times, insisting that it will keep him warm. Of course, the wine only makes Fortunato drunker and easier for Montresor to trick as he leads him deeper and deeper into the catacombs until he arrives at the place where he shackles him to the wall and seals him in a vault he builts on the spot with supplies he had prepared ahead of time. The wine is conveniently at hand as they journey toward this destination.
