Focusing on the theme of revenge in "The Cask of Amontillado," the setting of:
First the carnival, the costumes, suggest deception, falseness and presenting an image of yourself, while hiding your true nature.
This is what Montresor does with Fortunato, he hides his real purpose of murder, while deceiving his victim into believing that he will in fact be rewarded with a prize sherry.
Second, the tombs provide another element to the theme of revenge, a dark, deep, feeling that can be deadly. The tomb where Montresor leads Fortunato to the location of the fine sherry is really a journey of revenge, deep, dark and full of vengeful intentions.
Third, when Montresor walls up his victim, he is sealing Fortunato along with his sins and crimes against him, so as to free himself and his family from the burden of carrying the revenge any further.
