There is nothing in the Prologue to suggest the Merchant's opinion of marriage. Chaucer tells us that he "told of his opinions and pursuits in solemn tones, he harped on his increase of capital," but nothing of marriage itself. Mostly, the Merchant is living above his means and is able to make people think he is wealthier than he is when in fact, he is in great debt.
