For english we are supposed to create a new character than represents today's society. It has to be written like Chaucher with the rhymes and the couplets. Can you give me ideas of a new character that represents today's society?

What a cool assignment!  How about....a politician, a lobbyist, a rock/rap star, a high school teacher, an unemployed autoworker, an advertising agency copywriter?  Just think of the way society has changed since Chaucer's time, and the new occupations or pre-occupations people now have.  I'd love to know what you end up writing.

I like this assignment (and I'll probably use it the next time I teach CT).

How about an athlete? You could have all sorts of companions for your athlete, such as a trainer, a manager, a coach, and the like. Maybe he could be going on pilgrimage to atone for steroid use or perhaps he wants to pray for a winning season. Good luck!

Do you mind telling us what you did with your character? I'd like to know how it went.

When I teach Canterbury Tales, I have my students create a modern character and write an introduction to that character in a poem - modeling the prologue. Then I make them write a short story from the perspective of that character. Then the entire class journeys around the school, stopping to read their stories at different locations. At the end, we have a feast. The students love it and it allows them to really relate to the Tales.

I like that idea. I wish I could teach the Tales!!
