The Canterbury Tales Group

The Wife of Bath did not work. She was a professional wife LOL! She was married 5 times and was looking for a 6th husband at the time of her journey to Canterbury. The Wife of Bath wore upscale clothing, by today's standards. She wears nearly ten pounds of clothing that she wove herself (Sunday clothing, as for church) along with her hat. The colors she wears are bold (reds and blues and whites) and she is not afraid to be seen. The Wife of Bath is overtly sexual, bawdy, and bold. She speaks her mind and is not afraid to do so. She is opinionated and proud of it. She uses men to get what she wants, particularly money and gifts. The narrator of the tales does not seem to chide her for her beliefs and attitude, nor does he praise them. Her tale stands alone and so does her character, meaning that her tale is one of the most memorable ones of the entire group of tales! Love, to the Wife of Bath, is mostly about sex and money, although she does admit to loving one of her husbands (or so she says). She does not want, nor need, to be loved as long as she gets what she wants. Posted by kwoo1213 on Oct 28, 2008. |
