The only copy of Cantar del mio Cid I have has only 152 chapters in three cantos, and although there are two Moors mentioned whose names begin with "A" I found no mention of an Apollin or any "Islamic image." However, there is an Apollin in another medieval poem, le Chanson de Roland, or the Song of Roland. Dating from perhaps the middle of the 11th century, it mythologizes a relatively minor battle in the Pyrenees between Christian and...

The unique manuscript of the Cantar de mio Cid is missing its first folio (manuscript page), and so the poem begins by describing the Cid's reaction to the news of his banishment. From contemporary Latin histories and from a note later in the poem (laisse 9), we discover that the reason for the Cid's banishment is the accusation by King Alfonso VI that the Cid had embezzled money collected from the Moors for the king. This is the second time...

From the Catholic Encyclopedia:

The date of its composition has long been a disputed question. Many critics whose names must be mentioned with respect, among them Dozy and Ticknor, place it at the beginning of the thirteenth century; but today the best opinion places the poem a half-century earlier. Among those who think it was written as early as the middle of twelfth century are many eminent Spanish and foreign scholars, including Sanchez,...

When was the El Cid poem written? What year?

Well, that's a tough question to answer with precision, because versions of the poem almost certainly circulated via oral tradition before it was written down.

That said, the oldest written version we have is a fourteenth century copy of a version that indicates it was copied from a manuscript written in 1207 by Per Abbat
