Later, in Chapter XI, the old woman tells Candide her own biography of trials and tribulations. But, first she informs Candide that she is the illegitimate daughter of Pope Urban X [fictitious pope] and the Princess of Palestrina. With this mother she was brought up in "a palace so magnificent that all the castles of your German barons could not have served as its stable." As royalty, she was later betrothed to a prince, but a former mistress poisoned him. When her mother and she set out for a new home in their despair, a Barbary pirate ship descended upon them and took over the ship. After this incident, her tragic life continues.
