i definitely did not like the book. For me when i sitdown to read a book i expect there to be a thrill, mystery and a little happyness somewhere in the book. This book is seriously rot to me. i think it was written by a deeply depressed and jobless. the book is too negative and there is too much slicing up of people and women being ravished. i would like to know what was going on through voltare's mind when he was writing this book. That's odd. I read Candide many years ago for a college French class--in French, mind you. I don't remember it as being particularly negative. It is a parody of the simple-minded "God's in his heaven, so all's right with the world" philosophy. You don't think ship wrecks and human sacrifice are thrilling???? Reply to #3 What a riot! I am on board with you. :) It's been years since I read this book, but I know that things could've turned out much worse for Candide than ending up living the rest of his years peacefully on a small farm with friends who each take on a task to ensure the smooth operation of running the farm. Intriguing. Posted by amy-lepore on May 14, 2008. |

I have not finished reading the book, therefore I cannot give a final assesment of the book. Up to now (chapter 25) I think that it is a good book, which has to be read in depth to understand the real meaning, the satire and also the jokes Voltaire makes throughout the book. I think that it is a very important book, since it attacked many people/institutions of Voltaire's time, leading, with other philiosophers, the Enlightenment revolution which leads to more modern history. I think that it has some thrill and adventure, which make in interensting. Posted by zlatan-gio-scuri on May 14, 2008. |

As Zlatan-gio posted (but changed a little bit): I have not finished reading the book, therefore....... i can give an answer, i disliked the book!!!!! i found the book boring, all the story about him passing these non sence things, people coming back to life after they were killed!!!! some times a nice book is when a main charecter dies, and the second character keeps reminding the reader of what had happend!!!!! Everyperson has a different way of reading and understanding a book!!! i prefered "The catcher in the rye", because the language was more, hmh...... "teen" i guess i can say!!!!! Well you can't give your point of view right now since we aren't finished. I think that it's a good book, it's easy reading but in the same time it has a lot of details. You can reflect on the text, because often, in this book, you can read behind the sentences. In other words Voltaire's way of writing gives the sentences more meanings that what you can think at first impact. I can say that it's a good book but it's not my style. I think this book sucks because is too satiric and in some part so much it is barely easy to understand. I also think that some characters are unnecessary like pangloss ethat has a way of thinking too positive and in realistc.
