Born in Paris, France on November 21, 1694, author Francois-Marie Arouet was known primarily by his pen name, Voltaire. In many ways, Voltaire was the most modest and least introspective of men, certainly among celebrated men of letters that lived during that time. Even while spending Christmas night in 1764 with Boswell, the famous biographer of Samuel Johnson and other literary figures, Voltaire discussed philosophy, not himself.
