the mystery in Candida revolves round a number of things- the poet does not belong to the domestic sphere, who is the stronger man, Morell or Marchbank, so on and so forth. but i think that the secret in the poet's mind was to uphold Candida in the eyes of her husband so that he would start to value Candida a bit more than what he used to do. From the play we do get an image of Candida as a neglected wife, Morell being too busy with his sermons, preachings, etc. the poet's sensitive eyes were quick to notice this and all the domestic upheavels were more a sort of acting on the part of Marchbank. And the leaft the house seeing his plan worked out, that the husband had learned to value the wife! Posted by tanmoykaushik on Oct 24, 2008. |
