The savagery of the weather illustrates nature's uncontrollable strength.
By joining the wolfpack, Buck is abandoning the last ties of his domestic life to answer the call of nature (the wild) within him. As a naturalistic writer, London believes that this instinct exists in all creatures, and that its influence is so strong that it ultimately controls behvior.
