What keeps Buck and Spitz from getting into a fight after Spitz takes Buck's sleeping spot?

Buck realized that in order for him to assume his "rightful" place as leader, the time and place had to be right. The issue had to be more "legitimate" than just their sleeping quarters. Had they fought at that time, he might have lost credibility amongst the other dogs and his owners. At it happened, the actual "Fight for Mastery" occurred after Spitz attacked Buck. After such treachery, Buck was justified in not only defending himself, but in seeking revenge. Afterward, no one could argue with Buck's actions. His response was seen as appropriate and noble. He was doing what any strong leader would be expected to do. He acted in a manner which engender respect in those that he would lead.
