The declining action in "The Call of the Wild" is that Buck realizes that there can be little, if any authentic connection, to human beings, the worst predator of all.  After he returns to find Thornton and the other dogs slaughtered, Buck takes care of the Yee- Hats responsible by obliterating them.  After that, he surrenders himself to the "call of the wild" as he leaves human society forever and retreats into the wilderness.  The conflict that raged within Buck since his placement in the wild is now officially resolved as he embraces his true sense of self.  The Yee- Hats begin to revere him in a 'boogey man' kind of way in their calling him the "Ghost Dog."  Buck officially severs his ties to humanity as he realizes that they cannot be trusted.  He visits Thornton's grave once a year.  He does this to symbolize his past that was linked to humans and in deference to Thornton's care for him.  Outside of that, Buck has realized that "The Call of the Wild" is both within him in a pure sense and within humans in masquerading form.
