    The change refers to Buck's transformation from a completely domesticated animal to a creature of the wild. 

    At the beginning of the story, Buck "lives the life of a sated aristocrat" (Chapter 1) on the ranch of a country gentleman.  By the end of the story he has severed all ties with humanity, forsaking his former "tame" life to respond to the primordial call within him and run wild with the wolves.
