An omniscient third person narrator tells the story of the young Mafutu. (An ominscient narrator is one who knows the thoughts and motivations of his characters).

We know that it is an omniscient narrator from the opening pages. Here, the narrator tells the reader about Mafutu's fears: "It was the sea that Mafutu feared. He had been surrounded by it ever since he was born...He could not remember when the fear of it had first taken hold."
