Fuel efficiency used to be ranked fourth in importance to car buyers. Recent polls suggest it is the number one customer concern. If I was a car maker in Europe, or even the United States, I would quickly develop more fuel efficient cars, hybrids, natural gas and/or hydrogen cell cars to compete with Toyota's models. In addition, I would try to make larger cars, which is what American seem to want. If one could combine fuel-efficiency with consumer comfort, I think your market share would increase substantially. However, it's important to note that even Toyota lost money last quarter because of the poor economy. Therefore, I would first work with whoever it took to improve the economy so people would start buying new cars again.
