Toyota has gained market share because it has been building fuel efficient, well-running cars that people want in today's economy. Fuel efficiency used to be ranked fourth in importance to car buyers. Recent polls suggest it is the number one customer concern. If I was a car maker in Europe, or even the United States, I would quickly develop more fuel efficient cars, hybrids, natural gas and/or hydrogen cell cars to compete with Toyota's models. In addition, I would try to make larger cars, which is what American seem to want. If one could combine fuel-efficiency with consumer comfort, I think your market share would increase substantially. However, it's important to note that even Toyota lost money last quarter because of the poor economy. Therefore, I would first work with whoever it took to improve the economy so people would start buying new cars again.
