Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) refers to a system of manufacturing which offers considerable amount of flexibility in changing either the product design or production rates without too much expenditure of set up time or money.
The flexible manufacturing systems can have two types of flexibilities, machine flexibility and routing flexibility, or a combination of two. Machine flexibility refers to changing the operation of individual machines to manufacture products with some variations in their design parameters. All the products that can thus be thus produced on a machine without significant change in its set up are called homologus products.
Routing facility in a flexible manufacturing system allows it to change manufacturing the same product on alternate set of machines or on multiple machines. This flexibility allows easy variation in rate of manufacture of of differentt products.
