Divergent thinking refers to the type of thinking that leads to innovation and creativity. This type of thinking requires the ability to diverge or expand the scope of investigation and new ideas. Opposite of divergent thinking is convergent thinking, which requires that as investigation in to a problem proceeds the scope of investigation becomes narrower.
Both divergent thinking and convergent thinking are useful in business - different situation require different approaches. For example in developing a positioning statement of a new product, the best approach would be to start with a divergent approach, but subsequently while deciding on media mix for advertising campaign, it may be best to use convergent approach.
