The Story:
Grace Hoylard and her helper, Elma Duckworth, were alone in a
crossroads restaurant of a small Kansas town thirty miles west of
Kansas City. They were keeping a lonely vigil in expectation of the
arrival of the Kansas-City-to-Wichita bus that was due at 1:00
a.m. A raging blizzard left the restaurant deserted.
Shortly before the bus was due, Will Masters, the sheriff, came
in.
Grace and Elma’s conversation with Will made it clear
that, when the bus arrived, it would be unable to go farther before
morning. The roads to the west were closed by the heavy...
