   Brown suggests that broken promises and treaties that were designed to protect Native American autonomy are the largest reason as to why rights were violated.  Brown points out that agreements between settlers and Native Americans were not honored, leading to the usurpation of land and eradication of a culture.  Prior to Westward Expansion, there was an overall feeling of understanding and respect for Native Americans.  Yet, the policies of Jackson in relocating Native Americans and initiatives such as assimilation schools began the process of removal that led to a political disrespect of Native American culture and autonomy. The government pursued these policies during Westward Expansion and industrialization that put a premium on land acquisition and control, devaluing any rights to possession of and for Native Americans.
