Chief Little Crow headed up the attack. In 1862, the attack resulted in the largest mass execution for a single day in United States history, literally hundreds of Americans died that day. Hundreds of Santees were convicted of rape and murder, and in the end, 38 Santees were hanged. Chief Little Crow was killed by white settlers the next year.
