The irony is to emphasize the tragedy that occurred at Wounded Knee. The Sioux were almost annihilated by the cavalry and were shown no mercy by them. The white government never intended to give anything to the Native Americans and just wanted them to go away or to destroy them. The author shows in his book that even though the Native Americans had righteousness and justice on their side, the white men chose to ignore their rights and take what they wanted from them. In the end, they were no match against the guns of the army.
