I will assume that you are referring to events surrounding the Sand Creek massacre that is described in Chapter 4 of this book.
The trick here was partly done by the military and partly by the civilian government. As was often the case in relations between the Americans and the Indians, a treaty was signed. In this case the treaty gave the Cheyenne all the land between Sand Creek and the Arkansas River.
Soldiers then came into that area...

Brown suggests that broken promises and treaties that were designed to protect Native American autonomy are the largest reason as to why rights were violated. Brown points out that agreements between settlers and Native Americans were not honored, leading to the usurpation of land and eradication of a culture. Prior to Westward Expansion, there was an overall feeling of understanding and respect for Native Americans. Yet, the policies of...

There are several ways to progress with posing a question about Brown's work. Most of them will, like Brown's book, trace the change of Native Americans and their perception of both settlers and themselves.
1) Over time, how did the concept of Manifest Destiny change Native American's view of land, themselves, settlers, and the concept of America?
This one is fairly broad, yet indepth. Addressing each portion of the question would be a...

Also referred to as the Bozeman War or the Powder River War, Red Cloud's War was fought over rights to the Wyoming-Montana territories surrounding what was known as the Powder river country. After gold was discovered in the Montana territory the federal government began building a series of forts along the Powder River. Red Cloud and the...

No, the title of this book is not a direct quotation from anyone. The phrase of Bury my heart at Wounded Knee," appears at the beginning of Dee Brown's novel but the idea for the quote and the title came from a poem by Stephen Vincent Benet called, "American Names." The poem has nothing to do with the novel at all and simply had a phrase that impressed Mr. Brown.

Unfortunately, there is a great deal of misunderstanding about Big Foot's intent. Captain Miles is unaware that Big Foot had recently renounced the Ghost Dance religion. Therefore, Miles thinks Big Foot is on his way...
