Unlike "That Evening Sun" and "Red Leaves," the central effects of "Barn Burning" require only two characters, Ab Snopes and his son Sarty. The story has an interesting justice of the peace, a farmer named Harris who values Sarty more than he does his burned barn, the aristocratic de Spains, their black servant, and other Snopes relatives, the most important being an aunt and a mother who oppose Ab's activities and are probably the source of Sarty's own love of truth telling and justice.
