Why does Tim at some points feel the war is not real?

    There is a point in the story when the war had not yet changed anything for Tim.  He was still continuing life as usual.  The only changes were stories about a war in the newspaper and conversations in the tavern.  Sam was gone, but he just as easily could have been off at college, not war.
