Posted by ladyvols1 on Thursday March 12, 2009 at 3:11 PMIn chapter 7 of "My Brother Sam Is Dead," Life Meeker was getting cattle together to try and get ready to travel to Verplancks Point. Every year in November Meeker travelled to Verplancks Point to sell cattle, get money, and buy supplies for the tavern and general store. Tim tells us that the reason his father waited so late in the year to go to Verplancks Point was because the later he waited the more money he could get for the stock. Collins write on page 90:
It was best to go as late in the year as you could, because the closer to winter it was, the scarcer beef was and the higher the price you could get. But if we waited too long, it would snow and then we would have trouble.
