My Brother Sam is Dead is an opportunity to see into the possible life of a colonist living in the Revolutionary War period. It also shows how colonists could have possibly felt about the beginnings of the taxes and laws set down by the British government. By following one family's story, it is easier for the reader to be able to understand the history behind the story. In addition, the reader can empathize with the emotional relationships of the characters in this book as Sam goes off to war. As a whole, the book is a historical look into what a colonial family would have felt during the beginnings of one of the most historical periods in time.
