Inasmuch as history plays such a vital role in this novel, attention should be paid to the historical background of Britain at the turn of the century: the revolt of 1689 and the ensuing occurrences, which led to the social and political upheaval of the times. (Some of this history can be found discussed in worthy editions of the novel, in the notes.) Also, a familiarity with Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth would be helpful, the former for a better grasp of the Edgar-Lucy plot, and the latter for a deeper understanding of the nature of Lady Ashton.
