Using examples from mystery of heroism, why is learning from experience sometimes more effective than through textbooks and lectures?

Because we tend to remember experiences more vividly and for a longer period of time than we do what we read or hear.  Living through it makes it more meaningful...unless, of course, the "it" is a topic of great interest.  In this case, reading, lectures, film, etc. all tend to have greater "sticking power".
