    Becca and Gemma Berlin are the main characters in Briar Rose.  Becca is Gemma's granddaughter. Gemma's past is unknown and while Becca's mother and sisters do not care about Gemma or her past, Becca finds the mystery intriguing.  When Gemma dies, Becca is driven to find out what she can of Gemma's life.  Gemma had always told the story of "Sleeping Beauty" and had claimed that she herself was "Briar Rose."  Becca's journey to find out the truth takes her to Poland and back to World War II as she learns the true and horrifying story of her grandmother's life.
