   After wishing desperately for a child, a king and queen are granted their wish, and the queen gives birth to a baby girl. Of the thirteen fairies in the king's realm, the king only invites twelve to celebrate because he only has twelve golden plates to give them, causing the thirteenth fairy to show up, enraged, and place a curse on the baby. The curse is that the little girl will prick her finger on a spindle when she is fifteen years old, but the last good fairy, who had not yet bestowed her gift, reverses the death sentence and proclaims that the princess will simply sleep for a hundred years. On her fifteenth birthday, the king and queen leave the girl alone in the castle, and she wanders up to an abandoned tower where she discovers an old woman spinning flax. Wishing to attempt it herself, she takes up the spindle, but immediately pricks her finger and faints away, causing the entire castle, including the newly returned king and queen, to fall asleep. Thorny briar bushes grow around the castle and many young men, hearing the myth of the sleeping princess within, attempt to penetrate them, but die a miserable death, until one day (presumably 100 years later), a young prince tries to get through and succeeds. He enters the castle, finds the princess, kisses her, everyone wakes up, and the two are married and live happily ever after.
