In Huxley’s Brave New World, people are decanted instead of consummated.  Human beings are created in little bottles and are raised in nurseries where they are conditioned.  The words mother and birth are reminders of how things used to be – when the world was a less civilized place.

Of course, this novel is a satire, which criticizes and warns about certain technological advances such as birth control and things like conveyor belts in factories.  Huxley is highlighting the possible dangers of such “advancement” and goes as far as saying that terms which we deem to be beautiful, like mother and birth, can become smut words (so to speak).
