We see John as an isolated and alienated figure, and we have all felt that way sometimes. When he is repulsed by the rampant sex, the promiscuity, and the drug abuse we again sympathize with him. I think we sympathize with him because he is closer to our beliefs and our way of doing things. John is an authentic individual as we are individuals, subject to feelings, emotions, and true humanity.
