A flat character is a character that only exhibits one "side" to his or her personality.  Some people also describe a flat character as only having one or two personality traits, or refer to a flat character as "one dimensional".  You can address the following to find out how John is a flat character:

Goals/Desires.  What does John want most out of life?  If you can prove that he only wants one thing or similar things throughout the text, you're doing well.

Personality.  What personality traits does John have?  Are there only a few?  Do they more or less relate to/fit with one another?  If they do, and if John does not have any traits that conflict with the traits you've listed, you're in good shape.
